Born of Water: A Speculative Hybrid Novelette, Available Now

Purple & Green Stone Press

Welcome to The Burning Hearth and the home of Purple & Green Stone Press. I’m happy to announce that my reissue of Born of Water is now available for order. You will notice this is not the same cover from my previous cover reveal. Due to technical issues, I was unable to use that cover. When my daughter said she would like to do a cover for the book, I was thrilled. I am equally thrilled with the outcome.

I’m so happy to have this book under my own imprint. I love the idea behind this book, the stories, and the characters so much that when the previous publisher showed little interest and care in my project, I was beyond disappointed. Because of the publisher’s attitude towards my book, and my resulting disappointment in the finished product, my feelings towards it were tainted. Not the way one wants to feel about something they worked so hard to create. But all of that is removed now.

I hope you enjoy the following excerpt from the beginning of Part II, titled “Ebb”.

THERE was a girl born of water. In her youth, she ebbed and flowed with ease and grace, never questioning the moon’s push and pull of her emotional tides. In the summer months, she swam in the waters of Lake Wapello where, on some days, she fancied herself a dolphin. One of many in her pod. Fast and free, her fins cut the water as her flukes propelled her into a full body breach. Her rostrum high, inhaling the sun-heated air. With gleeful whistles, she arced wide and spun before returning to the surface. On other days, she assumed a narwhal, unicorn of the sea. On these days, she slowed and found pleasure exploring the depths of Arctic waters with the other magical, elusive creatures in her blessing.

Her dolphin breaches with her pod and her narwhal explorations with her blessing allowed her to embed joy and comfort into her family’s visits to Lake Wapello. But with each passing year, the visits began to expose her father’s rage-filled irritations (whether he was with them or not), her mother’s denial, and her older sister’s withdrawal.

With her lungs made strong from swimming, she could capture copious amounts of oxygen, which she held at length before a sustained exhalation. This control created an illusion of coping for the girl born of water. It calmed her heightening fears and staved off the panic attacks she swallowed along with the truths she inhaled.
